Practicable Interoperability

20140813_083014Practicable.  Here is the definition given by the Oxford English dictionary. It says practicable is “able to be done or put into practice successfully.” The word practicable is used expressive of plans that can be carried out.

I am of the opinion, in a small office interoperability can be achieved, and the “litmus test” of success is sharing the electronic record visually in real time with the most concerned person.

Any gaps of information in the electronic record can be quickly and easily rectified with a brief request, “would you please get the Neurosurgeon’s consult from the hospital stay.”   Within seconds, my nurse, just outside the door of the exam room, on her dual monitored standing desk, signs into the Hospital electronic record system, electronically faxes the PDF via the HealthCRM into the office electronic record.  On the large wall mounted screen up pops the Neurosurgeon’s consultation and we are reading the summary together, confirming what she now remembers.

This simple request of a patient is anything but easy to carry out multiple times throughout the day successfully.  This is an example of Pragmatic Interoperability, as Dr. Charles Webster describes in his January 15, 2016  blog post.

As my patient and I talk about her hospital stay, I know as soon as I make the request to my nurse, we will have the neurosurgeon’s consultation to review on the large screen, because I have to.
